Industry reports conclude that this is partially due to the growing success of Rose wine. Over the last five years, the number of people who regularly drink wine (a minimum of one glass per month) has surged up to 27 million from 22 million, or approximately 54% of the adult population.
As the price of wine has continued to fall over the years and become more affordable, there has been a steady rise in the number of female drinkers. And with this increase, Rose now contirbutes a massive five percent of all wine sales in the UK.
Interestingly, it seems that as accessibility to wine has increased, more people are resorting to buying bottles of Rose wine as opposed to red white. And the reason is because some are more palatable to take down when having a meal.
If we go back to 1980, stats show that the average person drank roughly 10 bottles of wine in a year, but this has increased to a staggering 28 bottles a year now. However, as much wine that these figures show we are drinking as a nation, we are still some way off catching up to the amount of beer that is purchased and consumed in the UK. We may spend more on wine due to the higher price but Beer is still the most consumed alcoholic drink in terms of volume.
Half the adults in Britain are Wine drinkers
